Tire & Suspension Faults

A tire has a deep cut that exposes the cord in the sidewall. Why is this an out-of-service condition rather than a monitor-it item?

  • A.The cords are the tire's strength; exposed and damaged cords mean the sidewall can rupture without further warning
  • B.Exposed cord improves traction in mud
  • C.Cord showing means the tire is almost new
  • D.The cut only affects the tire's appearance
Correct answer

A. The cords are the tire's strength; exposed and damaged cords mean the sidewall can rupture without further warning

Why

Rubber protects the cords, and the cords hold the pressure. Once the protective layer is cut through, moisture and flexing attack the structure directly, and sidewall failures are the most violent kind.
