Spring Brakes, Parking & Emergency Brakes

After parking for the night in very cold weather with wet brakes, what is the recommended practice when conditions allow?

  • A.Set the parking brakes as hard as possible
  • B.Leave the parking brakes off once stopped safely, chock the wheels, and let the brakes dry so they do not freeze stuck
  • C.Pour water on the drums to cool them
  • D.Disconnect the air lines overnight
Correct answer

B. Leave the parking brakes off once stopped safely, chock the wheels, and let the brakes dry so they do not freeze stuck

Why

This exception exists only for the freeze-stuck risk and only when the vehicle can be secured by chocks and transmission. In normal conditions the parking brakes should always be set when parked.
