How do you check that the trailer's service brakes actually respond before a trip?
- A.Trailer brakes cannot be checked until highway speed
- B.Apply them (for example with the hand valve or brake pedal while a helper watches, or by a low-speed stop test) and confirm the wheels brake and release properly
- C.Listen to the radio for brake noise reports
- D.The ABS lamp check alone proves the service brakes work
Correct answer
B. Apply them (for example with the hand valve or brake pedal while a helper watches, or by a low-speed stop test) and confirm the wheels brake and release properly
Why
A brake that never applies, or one that drags after release, has to be found in the yard, not on the first downgrade. A response check on every trailer brake is a standard part of combination inspection.
