When upshifting with a double-clutch, what happens to engine rpm between gears?
- A.You let rpm fall in neutral to the speed the higher gear needs at that road speed before engaging it
- B.Rpm must rise in neutral for an upshift
- C.Rpm stays exactly the same
- D.Rpm is irrelevant in a truck gearbox
Correct answer
A. You let rpm fall in neutral to the speed the higher gear needs at that road speed before engaging it
Why
A higher gear turns the engine slower at the same road speed, so the pause in neutral lets rpm drop to the matching point. Releasing the clutch at the wrong rpm either grinds the gears or jerks the driveline.
