ABS & Anti-Skid

Why does keeping the front wheels rolling under hard braking matter so much?

  • A.Rolling front tires can still respond to steering, while locked front tires slide straight regardless of wheel angle
  • B.Front wheels provide all of the vehicle's braking force
  • C.Locked front wheels steer faster
  • D.Steering only works above highway speed
Correct answer

A. Rolling front tires can still respond to steering, while locked front tires slide straight regardless of wheel angle

Why

Steering depends on the tire gripping and rolling in the direction it is pointed. ABS protection on the steering axle is therefore as much about avoiding the obstacle as it is about stopping before it.
