Shifting, Gauges & Engine Controls

Normal oil pressure behavior on a warmed-up engine is best described how?

  • A.Pressure should be zero at idle
  • B.Pressure never changes with rpm
  • C.Pressure rises with rpm and is lower at idle, staying within the manufacturer's normal range shown on the gauge
  • D.Maximum pressure at all times is ideal
Correct answer

C. Pressure rises with rpm and is lower at idle, staying within the manufacturer's normal range shown on the gauge

Why

Oil pressure follows engine speed because the pump is engine-driven, so a lower idle reading can be normal while a sudden drop at speed is not. A pressure reading that falls out of the normal range, or a warning light, means stop safely and shut down to prevent engine destruction.
