Shifting, Gauges & Engine Controls

What should you do if you miss a gear and end up in neutral while rolling?

  • A.Force the lever until it engages
  • B.Coast to the bottom of the grade
  • C.Turn off the engine and restart
  • D.Stay calm, match rpm to the road speed for the gear you want using the tachometer, and re-engage; if you cannot, stop safely rather than forcing it
Correct answer

D. Stay calm, match rpm to the road speed for the gear you want using the tachometer, and re-engage; if you cannot, stop safely rather than forcing it

Why

A gearbox in neutral gives no engine braking and no drive, but panic makes it worse. Knowing the rpm each gear needs at your speed lets you recover the shift, and a controlled stop is always better than grinding the transmission into damage.
